Carpal Tunnel & Chiropractic
Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, tingling and numbness in the hands from pressure on the median nerve in your wrist.

What Increases Your Risk

Carpal tunnel syndrome can result from any combination of health conditions and physical activities that increase pressure on the medium nerve as it passes through the wrist.

The carpal tunnel is composed of bone on three sides and a transverse carpal ligament on the fourth side. Nine tendons-the flexor tendons of the hand pass through this canal. The medium nerve can be compressed by the decrease in the size of the canal, an increase in the size of the contents (such as swelling of the outer covering of the tendons), or both.

  • Health problems that can cause arm pain, swelling in the joints and soft tissues in the arm, or reduce the blood flow to the hands. These include obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lupus, hypothyroidism, and multiple sclerosis.
  • Females between the ages of 40 and 60 have the highest risk for developing carpal tunnel. Pregnant women can develop temporary symptoms when they retain fluid. Birth control pills, menopause and taking estrogen are all known to increase your risk of developing carpal tunnel.
  • Repetitive motion or activities at work or home.
  • Smoking, because it affects the blood flow to the medium nerve.
  • Forceful or prolonged activities such as driving for long periods or using your hands to grip and pinch objects.
Chiropractic and Carpal Tunnel

Chiropractic techniques that work so well with the spine can be applied to other joints in the body. Virtually every joint is susceptible to fixations and malfunctions that impair function and range of motion. Trauma, micro-trauma, vibrations and repetitive motions are often culprits.

Many are surprised to learn that the cause of their wrist problem may be due to functional changes to one or more joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist. Misalignment in the upper spine can compromise the workings of any structure between it and the tip of your fingers.

We have developed a technique to be used in conjunction with the chiropractic adjustments that has proven very effective in eliminating carpal tunnel. We will teach you theses techniques so that you can utilize them to prevent any future flair ups.
