Headaches & Chiropractic
If you suffer from headaches, you are not alone. Nine out of ten Americans suffer from headaches at some point in their lives. Some are occasional, some frequent, and some every day. They are described as dull, throbbing, and some cause debilitating pain and nausea.
So what do you do when you have a headache? Do you take medicine and hope the pain goes away, do you try and ignore it and hope it will eventually go away? Well there is a better way.
A report released in 2001 by Duke University found that spinal manipulations resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck and had significantly fewer side affects and longer-lasting relief of tension headaches than a commonly prescribed medication.
Also, a 1995 study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches and that those who ceased chiropractic treatment after four weeks experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in contrast with those patients who received a commonly prescribe medication.
Research shows that Chiropractic care is an effective treatment option for headaches. So why wait if you suffer from headaches. Call our office at 404-578-2114 to schedule your complimentary consultation today.
What Can Cause Headaches?
Headaches can be due to a wide variety of causes, such as drug reactions, low blood sugar, high blood pressure, and temporomandibular joint dysfuntion (TMJ), but the most common "trigger" or cause is stress. There are three kinds of stress, emotional, chemical and physical.
- Chemical stress includes foods that contain monosodium glutamate (MSG) such as soy sauce, and meat tenderizers. Foods that contain the amino acid tyramine should also be avoided, such as cheeses, chocolate and pickled foods.
- Nitrite containing foods such as hot dogs or other processed meats which often contain sodium nitrite can cause headaches.
- Exposure to poisons, even common household varieties like insecticides, lead, and mold can lead to headaches.
- Emotional stress can trigger headaches by causing muscles to contract and constriction of blood vessels. Depression, anxiety, frustration and even excitement can lead to developing a headache.
- Physical stress such as exercise, manual labor, and repetitive actions can also lead to headaches.
What Can You Do?
Watch your posture. If you spend alot of time in front of a computer, watching television, or at your desk, take a break every hour. Get up and walk around, stretch your neck and shoulder muscles.
Exercise. Light resistance training and cardiovascular activities not only will help reduce the occurrence of headaches but will improve your overall health.
Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day to help avoid dehydration, which can lead to headaches.
How Can Chiropractic Help You?
Each individual case is different and requires a thorough evaluation with Dr. Cone. The evaluation will include a thorough history, exam and may include x-rays if deemed necessary.
Dr. Cone will then explain his recommendations for care which often include:
- Spinal manipulations or chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate the stress on your musculoskelatal system.
- Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and perhaps the addition of B complex vitamins.
- Offer advice on posture, ergonomics (work postures), exercises and relaxation techniques. This advice should help to relieve tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.
Dr. Michael Cone has undergone extensive training to help his patients in many ways--not just back pain.
